Puptown Advisory Council:

Margate Park dog owners' group

The Puptown Advisory Council is a group of concerned dog owners who wish to work with the Park District, the police department, and other dog owners to improve conditions for all dogs (and humans) who use the Margate Park dog-friendly enclosed area on Lawrence Avenue at Marine Drive.

Halloween Costume Party! Deck out your dog on Sunday, October 29, for what promises to be a great time. The party starts at 2 pm; costume judging begins at 2:30. Don't miss this great chance to meet your north-side dog neighbors, win prizes (including a raffle--no costume required), and check out the latest canine costumes. Raffle items include merchandise from Barker & Meowsky. All dogs will receive a special treat bag. $5 donation requested to benefit Puptown's drinking fountain and maintenance fund! Write for more information or to volunteer.

Asphalt update: At the October 16 meeting it was announced that the Park District plans to pave over the dog area at the end of November. (This date has been moved forward several times.) The new surface will be asphalt. The Park District has indicated that asphalt is the most practical surface, given concerns about cleanliness and sanitation.

Lights: The path running along the west side of the dog area is the only unlit walkway in Margate Park. This potential safety and security hazard affects park walkers as well as dog-area users. The Puptown Advisory Council plans to ask the Margate Park Advisory Council to support a request for lights near the dog area.

Dog-napper? MONDO (Montrose Beach Dog Owners) reports that a man thin, white male, older, long hair has been seen trying to steal dogs, particularly poodles, near the totem pole (at Waveland Avenue, 3700 N, in Lincoln Park). He drives an old rusty white Ford van. This information has not yet been verified.

Next meeting: Monday, November 13, 7 pm, at Margate Park Fieldhouse (4921 N. Marine Drive). The Puptown Advisory Council usually meets at 7 pm on the first Monday of every month. November's meeting has been shifted because of the November 7 election.
